Factory Sealed! An adventure in 4K Physical Media
Full disclosure: I do not own a 4K player or 4K television. I'll upgrade eventually. Much like my dive into the vinyl record craze of the 2010s, I've been curating a collection of 4K physical media despite not being able to watch them yet.
Since August 2025, I've accumulated more than 150 4K movies. I usually focus on upgrading titles from my massive DVD/Blu-ray collection. If I find a movie I haven't seen, I try to make sure it's a combo pack with a Blu-ray included so I can actually watch it now. Along the way, I've also started discovering boutique labels like Criterion, Arrow Video, Mondo, Second Sight, and Shout Factory, where collectible editions, steelbooks, and slipcovers become part of the appeal.
A lot of that collecting has happened through Whatnot for me, which I discovered in August 2025. The easiest way I can describe it is Twitch, but people sell stuff during the streams. You bid against other viewers, and I've found everything from standard Blu-rays and DVDs to imports and harder-to-find collector's editions. I both highly recommend it and highly recommend staying away from it if you want to maintain your bank account.
So, with more than 150 4Ks now sitting on my shelves, here are my current Top 12 pieces of physical media. Since I still can't actually watch the 4K discs, the transfers and viewing quality aren't part of my assessment. This is all about the movies, artwork, packaging, collectability, and everything else that makes physical media fun to collect.

12. Godzilla (1998) Steelbook
This was the first Godzilla movie I watched back in the '90s. I still need to dive deeper into the classic films, especially since I have the original on Criterion DVD. The current versions are all excellent in different ways! I know the 1998 film isn't considered one of the better entries in the franchise, but the steelbook art is great. The matte finish, with the eye on the cover and the foot on the back, made this a must-have for me.
11. Cliffhanger import Steelbook
This is an import steelbook of a brilliant action movie! For some reason, we don't get releases like this very often in the States, but I've found imports are pretty easy to come across while collecting. In a sea of excellent action movies from this era, I think Cliffhanger tends to get overlooked.
10. Lawrence of Arabia 60th Anniversary Steelbook
This is an anniversary edition of an all-time classic that I have admittedly never seen. I grabbed this steelbook for its awesome artwork and collectability, and as an excuse to finally check the movie off my watchlist...eventually.
9. Nightmare Alley – Criterion Collection 4K + Blu-ray
Guillermo del Toro is probably my favorite active director. His movies are always so unique and interesting! This Criterion Collection set includes the black-and-white director's cut as well as the original version of the film, with both 4K and Blu-ray discs. I preordered this one as soon as it was announced, and I love the look of the set.
8. Reservoir Dogs – Severed Ear Slipcover Steelbook
It took me several years and several viewings to appreciate Reservoir Dogs. I came to it years after watching most of Tarantino's other stuff, which probably wasn't the best lens to see it through for the first time. This is a used copy I found on Whatnot, but how could I pass up a steelbook with a severed-ear slipcover? After a recent rewatch, I've really come to appreciate this movie.
7. Dredd – Slipcover Steelbook
This was actually the first 4K I purchased. I found it on sale at Walmart, and it helped start this whole collection. Dredd is an extremely underrated comic book movie, especially considering how little attention it received when it was released. The look of the film and its slow-motion sequences are visually stunning and unique. Steelbooks with both 4K and Blu-ray discs and slipcovers are some of my favorite pieces to collect, and this one is an incredible set.
6. Dragonslayer – Paper Slipcover Steelbook
I bought this steelbook on a Whatnot stream for two reasons: the steelbook artwork is incredible, and it came with a cardboard slipcover featuring equally stunning art. I've been watching more of these '80s fantasy movies lately, and they're all somewhat cheesy, but they're also a lot of fun!
5. They Live – Shout! Factory Steelbook with Matte and Gloss
Much like The Bark Knight himself, there isn't a John Carpenter film I've seen that I didn't like. They Live is a sci-fi classic that feels increasingly prescient based on what we're seeing in the world today. This Shout! Factory steelbook was a must-have for me. The cover uses a great matte/gloss combination, and the disc art and interior artwork are all top-notch!
4. In the Mouth of Madness – Arrow 4K Box Set
Arrow makes incredible packages for its releases, and I'm always on the lookout for their stuff! This In the Mouth of Madness 4K box set is an excellent example of how much they put into their releases, with incredible artwork, a bonus book and a poster. This is also a Carpenter film I haven't seen yet, so when I finally upgrade to a 4K player and TV, it'll be one of the first few 4Ks I watch.
3. The Hitcher – Second Sight Films 4K Box Set
This Second Sight box set is a physical media collector's dream! The packaging and artwork are fantastic, and it includes a hardcover behind-the-scenes book, screenplay book and art cards, along with both the 4K and Blu-ray. I watched The Hitcher for the first time last fall and thought it was incredible. I don't think nearly enough people have seen it, and it has an amazing soundtrack!
2. Interstellar – Walmart Exclusive Steelbook
I consider sci-fi my home genre. It's so multifaceted, with everything from time travel and alternate history to creature features, space exploration and first contact. There's so much depth and so many interesting ideas to explore, and to me, Interstellar is the pinnacle of what the genre can be.
I drink the Nolan Kool-Aid. I love movies that give me ideas to think about long after they're over, and Nolan is a master at that. I came across this Walmart-exclusive steelbook during a Whatnot stream and got it for a good price. I love the artwork and the imagery they chose for both the steelbook and the discs.
1. Labyrinth Anniversary Box Set
Labyrinth is a strange movie. I really enjoy Jim Henson productions and fantasy movies, and it's an excellent combination of both. I watched it for the first time just a few years ago after finding a DigiBook anniversary Blu-ray edition, and it's such a time capsule for that sci-fi/fantasy era of the '80s.
I won this set during a Whatnot stream where two sellers had a bunch of collectible movie and TV box sets available. I paid around $40–50 and ended up winning this set, which is worth more than $100!
It came with a static-cling decal, behind-the-scenes book, art cards, and a crystal ball with a wooden stand, all packaged inside a magnetic box with incredible artwork. This is by far the best 4K I've picked up so far!
